Reasons for backdating council tax benefit
To qualify for backdating, you must be able to prove you had good cause for the period you are claiming.
If your request has been successful you will be informed by letter.
If you qualify for Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction (or both), your entitlement will normally be awarded from the Monday after you requested the application form (as long as you return the form within one calendar month).
In some cases the start date of your claim can be backdated for up to one month prior to your claim date.
It is therefore very important that you contact as soon as you want to claim.
Get your claim form or letter to us as soon as possible because it affects the date your benefit claim will start from.
We can backdate HB or CTS if you can prove that there is good cause or reason(s) why you were unable to apply for your benefit earlier.
If you disagree with the date your claim starts from for any other reason you can appeal against the decision.
If you or your partner, are aged 60 or over, and you claim Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction (or both), your claim will automatically be considered for backdating to an earlier date.If there is a reason that has stopped or delayed you applying for Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction you can ask for your claim to be backdated so that it starts from an earlier date.You can only get backdated benefit if there is continuous 'good cause' as to why you were unable to apply for your benefit earlier.If you are experiencing difficulties paying your rent, or you have got into arrears, you may need to make sure you request backdating for an earlier period.
